Archery Elk Hunting New Mexico: What Nonresidents Need to Know

New Mexico's September archery elk season is one of the premier bowhunting experiences in the West. The rut is in full swing, bugling echoes through the canyons, and the wilderness feels electric. But if you're a nonresident, there's a lot to navigate before you ever nock an arrow.

The Draw System for Nonresidents

As a nonresident, you'll apply through the annual NMDGF big game draw. Archery elk tags are available across many units, but the most desirable options—especially in the Gila and Apache forests—are competitive. Applying through the outfitter pool is one of the best moves you can make to improve your odds.

You can also build preference points if you don't draw. Each year you apply and don't draw, you gain priority in subsequent years.

When Is the Season?

The archery elk season in New Mexico typically runs from September 1 through September 24. This window covers the peak of the rut, when bulls are actively bugling, raking, and responding to cow calls. Mornings and evenings are prime, but we've called in bulls at midday in the thick timber.

What Gear to Bring

September in the mountains means warm days and cold nights. Here's what we recommend:

  • Bow setup: 60–70 lb compound or recurve. Practice at steep angles—you'll be shooting uphill and downhill in canyon country.
  • Clothing: Layering system. Mornings can be in the 30s, afternoons in the 70s. Quiet fabric is critical.
  • Boots: Broken-in mountain boots with ankle support. The Gila terrain is unforgiving.
  • Calls: Bring a diaphragm call and an external bugle tube. We'll coach you on calling strategy in the field.

Physical Preparation

This is not a roadside hunt. Expect 5–10 miles per day at 7,000–9,000 feet elevation. Canyon bottoms, ridgeline glassing, and stalking through dark timber are all part of the experience. Start a cardio and hiking program at least 8 weeks before your hunt.

Why Hunt with an Outfitter?

The Gila is 3.3 million acres. Without local knowledge, you're looking for a needle in a haystack. Our guides scout these mountains year-round, know where the bulls bed, water, and feed, and will put you in position for a shot. We provide 1×1 guiding so it's just you and your guide in the field.
